Diego Caballero Vélez

Diego Caballero Vélez is a post-doctoral researcher at the Centre of Migration Research, University of Warsaw. He received his PhD at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies. During his PhD, he has spent visiting periods at the Refugee Studies Centre (University of Oxford) and SGH Warsaw School of Economics.

His research focuses on the politics of migration governance in the European Union, with a special focus on the Southern and Central Eastern European regions. He is currently working at the E-Factor project: “Employer interests as an underrated factor in labour migration – an institutional approach” funded by the National Science Centre of Poland (OPUS-20). Its main goal is to understand employers’ interests influence over public policies in labour migration under a New Institutional Economics (NIE) approach. Apart from academia, Diego has worked at the European Commission as Blue Book trainee and serves as external consultant for governmental institutions in issues related to migration and EU politics.

He has presented his work at international conferences and published influential research in several journals such as International Migration and European Politics and Society. He is currently working on the publication of a monograph with Palgrave MacMillan about different political contestation of migration crises in the Central Eastern European region. The publication date is due to October 2023.
