Eugenio Cusumano

Eugenio Cusumano is a Jean Monnet Fellow and an assistant professor in International Relations at Leiden University. His research examines the influence of international norms in shaping military organizations and non-state actors’ involvement in security and crisis management. Over the last years, he especially concentrated on maritime security, studying the role of non-governmental organizations, coast guards, and navies in the conduct of search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean sea. His Jean Monnet project focuses on the moral and legal obligation to rescue those in distress at sea and its increasing contestation in the wake of seaborne migratory ‘crises’.
His research appeared in international relations outlets like the Journal of Strategic Studies, Cooperation and Conflict, Mediterranean Politics, International Relations Armed Forces& Society, and books published by Oxford and Stanford University Press, Routledge, and Palgrave.
