Last week our ESR Andreina De Leo presented her research on #EU #border #externalisation in Libya and #accountability mechanisms at the EU level at the ASILE project's training school on "Containing refugees and migrants? Allocating and Attributing Responsibility for Human Rights Violations". Special thanks to CEPS (Centre for European Policy Studies) and European University Institute's Migration Policy Centre (MPC) for organising & Nikolas Feith Tan, Eleni Karageorgiou, Andrew Geddes and the audience for great feedbacks and discussions! Congratulations to our first PhD to finish!!
Last Thursday, I succesfully defended my Ph.D. dissertation 'Shaping Participation - Children's and Teachers' Language Practices in Linguistically Diverse Early Childhood Education and Care' at Maastricht University (Cotutelle with University of Münster). Thanks to my supervisors Leonie Cornips, Gunther De Vogelaer and Christine Arnold for all the support along the way, to the opposition for engaging with my work, and of course to all the children and teachers who participated in my research. I had a wonderful time celebrating this milestone!

We look back upon a succesful symposium "Linguistic and Social Actors Across Contexts". The symposium highlighted the collaboration between the University of Münster and Maastricht University during the LIMES project. After an opening by the chair of the LIMES executive board, Sophie Vanhoonacker, a wide range of sociolinguistic, educational and interdisciplinary research was presented and discussed. The presentations included: - Leonie Cornips (Maastricht University/KNAW): The animal turn in linguistics: the dairy cow as a linguistic actor - Sara Atwater, Daan Hovens, Yan Jia (Maastricht University): Research from the chair “Languageculture in Limburg” at Maastricht University - Christina Huf (University of Münster): Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) as a relational place with children - Gunther De Vogelaer (University of Münster): Children’s accent discrimination abilities: some experimental results - Marie Rickert, Wyke Stommel, Marcel Becker (Radboud University): An Interactional Approach to Digital Technologies in Second Language Education

📢 Event Alert! Join us at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel on January 26 or online for discussion on #fundamentalrights #accountability in the context of #Frontex coordinated operations. This #hybrid event will unpack the intricacies of recent developments surrounding Frontex’s legal accountability, examining a line of cases where the Court of Justice of the EU found no liability of the Agency for alleged fundamental rights violations taking place during joint operations with Member States. The discussion will extend beyond legal redress mechanisms to explore the potential of more flexible accountability structures such as the Frontex’s Consultative Forum, its Fundamental Rights Officer (FRO), and external watchdog institutions like the European Ombudsman in enhancing Frontex's fundamental rights accountability. The event, organized together with Merijn Chamon, Sarah Tas, and Mariolina Eliantonio will see a stellar line up of both academics and practitioners working on Frontex accountability structures. New article alert from our PhD, Andreina!
Two weeks ago, commenting on externalisation practices in a commentary for the European Policy Centre, I noted that offshore processing was one of the few migration control mechanisms that had never been implemented in the EU. One week later, the Italian government announced to have reached agreement with Albania to process asylum applications there under "Italian and European legislation". Yesterday, the European Commission stated in a press release that the Protocol does not violate EU law, as it falls outside its scope of application, and that international protection claims would be examined under national law only. In this piece, I maintain the opposite, arguing that if asylum applicants get to the Italian territory / border, this would trigger the applicability of the Asylum Procedure Directive, and they would acquire the right to stay in the Member State (either in the territory, or at the border / transit zones) for at least the duration of the first instance procedure, precluding a transfer to a third country. If this is not the case, and the asylum application is made in Albania, the Italian authorities would be allowed to carry out an extraterritorial processing outside the EU legal framework, but they would not be able to grant international protection, being it a EU uniform status. For this reason, both successful and unsuccessful asylum applicants would in my view still have a right to access the asylum procedure in a EU Member State after the processing in Albania. To give credit where is due, I would have probably not published this without intense discussions with friends & colleagues in the last few days, including Eleonora Celoria Eleonora Testi Daniela Vitiello Tamás Molnár Riccardo Viviani & Andrea Longo ! 📣 NEW PUBLICATION | EU-Tunisia like UK-Rwanda? Not quite. But would the New Pact asylum reforms change that? As highlighted by Andreina De Leo in her latest European Policy Centre Commentary, "while the EU would be unable to conclude a UK-Rwanda-style agreement, the pressure for reforms, as well as the recent Memorandum of Understanding with Tunisia, signal the threat of diminished human rights protections and safeguards." Read her Commentary here 👇 https://lnkd.in/eKuFhQFE
