I feel lucky to have participated in two executive training programs at the European University Institute these past two weeks. The first is "Migration Communication Strategies: Effective Approaches to Depolarise the Debate," which was organized by both the School of Transnational Governance and the Migration Policy Centre. I thought it was the perfect mix of academic and practical since it conveyed lots of interesting insights about how to incorporate research on public attitudes toward migration into communication campaigns that actually work. I was really impressed by how well the hybrid format worked, too. I know it's not easy to make it feel like online participants are also in the room, but of course Marina Vlachodimitropoulou and Lorenzo Piccoli (and the technical team) pulled it off. Still, I enjoyed crossing the screen once in a while to meet the in-person participants. 😄 The second one is "Unboxing the Commission: How to Understand and Engage with the EU Executive," which was delivered by a roster of speakers that included former European Commission officials as well as academics and public affairs specialists who have engaged with the Commission. I now have a deeper understanding of the Commission thanks to this program. Thanks to Jakov Bojović (it's great to see you here in Florence after our Jean Monnet classes at Central European University!) and Michael Bauer of the School of Transnational Governance for putting it together. I also learned a lot from my fellow participants, who brought a wealth of experience that really enriched the discussions. And I loved that the program included a visit to the Historical Archives of the European Union, where we had a glimpse of how the process of archiving materials deposited by EU institutions works.  Here are just a few "class pictures." I'm amused that I look ridiculously happy receiving a certificate (from Andrew Geddes, the director of the Migration Policy Centre) in one of them. I showed it to my mom (of course), who said that out of all the graduations I've had somehow this is where I look the happiest. 😄
