Join this Migration Working Group to explore how migration reshapes political institutions, either through recognition and participation or through moral backlash and exclusionary reform.
This session will examine two papers, the first one develops a novel measure of formal access for people with lived experience of migration and displacement within international organisations such as the European Union, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the International Organization for Migration, tracing how recognition and participation have evolved over time.
The second paper will turn the discussion to the United States, showing how immigration can trigger moral backlash and examining the rise of alcohol prohibition to demonstrate how norm-based mobilisation fueled anti-immigration politics.
Together, the paper presentations highlight how migration reshapes governance by redefining the boundaries of political voice and belonging.
The Migration Working Group (MWG) is a researcher-led research group, whose aim is to foster exchange on the latest, cutting-edge migration research and give the opportunity to early career scholars and PhD researchers to present their research.
