Training
Introduction
The Migration Policy Centre (MPC) at the European University Institute (EUI) conducts advanced research and training on the transnational governance of international migration, asylum, and mobility to provide new ideas, rigorous evidence and critical thinking to inform major European and global policy debates.
Format
Our training activities support and enhance professional development by bridging advanced research and the practical experiences of a wide variety of stakeholders including academics, diplomats, policy officials, civil society organisations, international organisations, and journalists. MPC trainings provide an opportunity to step back from individual or organisational perspectives and to build connections in a learning environment that is interactive, inclusive, and immersive.
Interactive: a combination of expert inputs and practical activities
Expert inputs are combined with practical activities. Sessions generally begin with input from the trainer that is not a general, descriptive presentation, but involves discussion of recent research or about challenges from the perspective of the organisation she/he is working for, with practical examples. The input is followed by an activity: a plenary debate, a simulation, a case study, or group work on a given question. This combination of trainer-led input sessions and practical activities is crucial to build on the expertise of participants and create space for discussing varying perspectives.
Inclusive: a diverse and trust-based environment
An inclusive and trust-based environment is created by trainers that bring a variety of perspectives. Participants in our training programmes are highly diverse in terms of their countries of origin, professional backgrounds and career experiences. We strive to ensure balance in terms of gender and diversity of backgrounds. Discussions follow the Chatham House Rule: anyone who attends the training is free to use information from the discussion but is not allowed to reveal who made any particular comment.
Immersive: a continuous and open exchange
We create online tools that facilitate learning, professional development and exchange beyond the classroom. Online tools provide a detailed description of the programme, readings and other resources, as well as additional information and contacts of the trainers and participants. We do not require that participants prepare before the training, but we make reading materials and other resources available online to enable participants to get a clear sense of the training. We then use these online tools to maintain connections with those who attend our trainings that can lead to further cooperation and collaborations.
