Biography
Baya Amouri is a legal researcher specializing in forced migration, irregular migration, and the impact of political agendas on asylum policy. Her research examines the intersection of legal frameworks and political dynamics in shaping asylum policies, particularly in Visegrád countries. She earned her PhD in Legal Studies from the University of Szeged, Hungary, with highest honours (Summa cum laude) in 2023. Her thesis, titled ‘The Interaction between the Asylum Policies of the Visegrád Group and International and EU Obligations,’ explores various aspects of EU asylum policies, including the stances of the Visegrád countries on asylum policy, border controls, the criminalization of humanitarian efforts, and the challenges to the rule of law and fundamental rights.
Amouri has published extensively on topics such as refugee rights, asylum procedures, and the role of international law in protecting displaced persons. Her work also extends to advocacy efforts aimed at promoting more humane and rights-based approaches to refugee management.
As a Max Weber Fellow, Amouri will undertake a new project that examines the EU legal frameworks regarding the protection of ‘climate migrants’ or ‘climate refugees’. In this perspective, she intends to clarify climate-induced migration, evaluate both EU and international legal frameworks, and suggest protective measures. Additionally, she aims to broaden her research agenda, publish her ongoing studies, and further develop her teaching and research abilities.
